![]() This book was written long before the current migrant crisis but, Janus-faced, its descriptions of the mass migration of Germans across their own country is heartbreaking and illuminating' -Antonia Senior, Book of the Week, The Times The characters' bewildered response to events are sometimes painfully honest. With restraint and subtlety, Kempowski explores the ordinariness of complicity with evil. 'All for Nothing was widely acclaimed in Germany on its publication in 2006 and its English translation deserves a wide audience. Far more than a great German novel Kempowski's late masterwork is a universal tract which suggests that history can only present the facts it is crafted stories such as this which enable us to grasp a sense of the vicious reality of war' - Eileen Battersby, Irish Times As a feat of story-telling All For Nothing surpasses even Grass's Crabwalk.Kempowski has summoned unforgettable characters who are shocking, even heartbreaking, in their human responses. 'It is brilliant vivid, unsentimental, fast moving, cinematic and, for all its apparent ease of telling, scrupulously well-structured. 'One of the best books I've ever read' -Jenny Erpenbeck, author of The End of Days It is Kempowski's crowning achievement: his last, and lasting, work of fiction' - Rachel Seiffert, author of The Dark Room ![]() ![]() I read with huge admiration and, yes, a bit of envy for the author's skill, imagination and daring' - Margaret McMillan, Best Books of 2016 New Statesman ![]()

5/13/2023 0 Comments Felix salten books![]() ![]() The book is a rich and busy ecosystem - much like a Viennese café. Returning to Bambi nearly a century after it was published is an opportunity to attune ourselves to its cacophony of sounds, its ripples of gossip, its characters’ headbutting. Paul Reitter’s afterword discusses the surprising political readings to which Salten’s fable of the woods was subjected. In Damion Searls’s new translation the fawn Bambi and his mother, the groves and thickets of the forest, the open and dangerous space of the great field, the ever-present threat of the human-the whole intricate weave of life and death that Salten handles so deftly-all come alive for a new generation of readers. Bambi is certainly a book that children can enjoy, but it is also a moving and lasting contribution to the literature of the natural world. Later Walt Disney made his famous movie of the book, and as a consequence Salten’s intimate, delicate, poetic, and gripping tale of forest life, a book that captures both the calm and the disquiet of the animal world, has come to be thought of as a children’s book. ![]() An English translation soon appeared with an introduction by the Nobel Prize winner John Galsworthy and was widely and well reviewed. Bambi first came out in Vienna a hundred years ago, the work of Felix Salten, a Viennese litterateur, journalist, and man about town, and was an immediate success with readers. ![]() ![]() Then, five years following his imprisonment, his wife's sister brings David a photograph of Matthew looking very much alive, accompanied by an unknown figure.Ĭan David escape prison, find Matthew and bring him home? ![]() While David is sure he did not murder his son, the overwhelming evidence against him puts him behind bars indefinitely. He’s accepted his fate however until his former sister-in-law arrives with a photograph of a boy she believes to be Matthew – supposedly murdered by David five years earlier. David’s a likeable lead and though the book unfolds in first person, it occasionally dips into a second person narrative, as if he’s talking to us… so we know HE also knows most people in prison claim to be innocent. He tells us he didn’t do it but didn’t fight the conviction because he blames himself anyway. ![]() ![]() I Will Find You by Harlan Coben starts by introducing readers to David, a man in prison for murdering his son Matthew. ![]() 5/13/2023 0 Comments Birth of a theorem cédric villani![]() Villani pours you inside his mind, leaving you nothing to hold on to, wondering what you’ll encounter Instead, Villani pours you inside his mind and swirls you around, leaving you with nothing to hold on to and breathlessly wondering what you’ll encounter next. Initially, it’s a refreshing alternative to most pop-maths books, which understandably make every effort to hold your hand as they guide you through tricky concepts. In a tumble of dialogue they bat about phrases like “modulo minimal regularity bounds” and “Moser-style iteration scheme” – essentially incomprehensible to the average reader, but they sweep you along for the ride. The pair are wrestling with a tricky case – not a murder, but the intricate properties of the Boltzmann equation, a statistical description of how particles in a gas behave. The book opens like a film noir, as Villani sits sprawling in his office with intellectual partner Clément Mouhot. The book covers the few years leading up to his Fields medal win, giving a flavour of the frantic thought processes behind the work that ultimately won him the prize. ![]() Reading his new book, Birth of a Theorem, I instantly recognised that same rhythm. ![]() ![]() As we chatted, I was charmed by the French mathematician’s rapid-fire way of speaking, a staccato rhythm that jumped from topic to topic without pausing for breath. ![]() ![]() Leaving no heir, his reputation was at the mercy of his successor, and Henry Tudor had too much at stake to risk mercy.
